Students at our Alternative Center for Educations (ACE) have been working on a project involving different types of therapy animals. They are currently using rabbits and chickens to see how they can impact the social and emotional support of students and how their self esteem is affected.
As part of that project, the students decided that they wanted to raise the chickens from eggs and they designed their own incubator to use in the process, requiring the students to monitor the temperature and humidity. They also monitor the development of the chicken embryos by candling the eggs. The students are raising silkie chickens and the project may evolve to include showing the chickens at the Eastern Kentucky Poultry Association Appalachian Fall Classic in Morehead, Kentucky.
